New and awesome: You can be good as almost-dead without risking your life!!!! Try now!

This is an experience which is part of many rituals of "manhood" in those human cultures that still live in small tribes. Those without all these more "modern" beliefs. Becoming a wage-slave and such... You know.

It absolutely isn't "bad" per se. I wouldn't want to miss most experiences I had under the influence of psychedelics. Some advice on them would have been nice, though.

It also surely isn't "new". In my eyes, it is pure human nature to search for fringe experiences.

Doesn't mean they understand what they are doing...

Some of these tribes have done this for centuries. I think they got a pretty good idea.

You underestimate the ability for primitive humans to do things they don't understand for no logical reason ever...

Isn't that exact the same thing all those chingchong-addicted kids do hanging in front of their smartphones every free minute ?

Short-feedback-loops is the secret ingredient.

Human behavior is easily controllable by feeding their short feedback loops.

Like Pawlows dog. Push a button -> instant reward. This principle pops up often in a lot of very paradox (but nonetheless typical) patterns in human behavior.

In case this is the underlying question: yes I think there are tons of primitive humans in today's modern society.

Such tribes are more collectivist than the west. They often literally cut down the tall poppies in their groups.

Their ideal is you become get more of a wage slave mindset not less.

It's no coincidence the new interest in psychedelics are lead by corporate managers rather and small business owners.
