Best theory I can find so far is that the plane of the ecliptic for the galaxy, is like any singular star system - it has an intestellar medium that's gathering in a flat disc. "Some people" (read: youtube "scientists") say we're passing through it and the shower of dust not only destabilizes stars (as seen recently (apparently)) from nearby neighbours causing high activity, flares, etc - but also showers the planets with (both) random particles and random matter - causing events anywhere from earthquakes/volcanoes to the far edges of conspiracy, pole flips, cave living for 1000 years, etc.

It's weird how the "pole shift" crowd and the "solar nova" crowd's research are both slowly becoming parallel in result/expectation.

If the evidence is legit, then the solar system may be crossing over the galactic plane.

Spiral galaxies appear to have magnetic poles. Crossing to the other side could cause the polar flops.

This may help explain the glacial ice ages.

I really hope it doesn't flip in the near future.

I'm fine kicking the pole-flip can down the road.
