He says this in The Pervert's Guide to Ideology, and the context is how God manifests in the New Testament compared to the Old Testament. It's part of his commentary on The Last Temptation of Christ, which I highly recommend. Here's the quote in its context.

Zizek is one of those "philosophers" that talks in cryptic analogies and inuendos so that everyone interprets it thier own way and in that way he gets many people who don't actually agree with each other to think they are all agreeing. It's a trick that mediums use to convince people they know more than they do by tricking the mark into filling in the information themselves.

I don't think it's on accident either. It seems that all socialism/communism is spread like this. No two collectivists can agree on the details of how thier version of socialism/communism will work but they all think they are agreeing with each other. And they all agree that the only reason socialism and communism has failed every time is because it was done wrong. It wasn't done thier way.

Communism needs everyone being a part of it to believe into it. Marx himself stated this implicitly when he damned "other" religions.

Interesting point. My impression is that it's more the doing of the media that choose to promote him over others; deals will ensue after that. From the beginning, his popularity struck me as unlikely because he's so uncharismatic. I celebrated this fact to a degree, because it shows even pop culture can have depth. It's only now dawning on me that his communist views are probably the reason why he's being promoted.

He isn't all bad, though. His film analyses are pretty sharp, and watching The Pervert's Guides is a good way of exposing yourself to new films. And I hear he's much more eloquent in his books.

I disagree. He's long winded to be clear. And like many "intellectuals" he loses people in his tangled tales. I can follow him. But I've found he wasn't getting anywhere, very far, or deep as some may think.

However, I will grant you that because he comes from his perspective, just as listeners have their viewpoints (socialists/communists or not), he doesn't cover all the angles, and of course the listeners certainly won't either - unless you're of the rare breed that can both, take in different ideas while not agreeing with them, AND can even sympathetically imagine things from others' perspectives. Then, of course, with greater perspectives we can judge for ourselves, triangulate, and have our own reality or "truths" - rather than being told what to think.
