If I scrubbed my assumptions of what certain things taste like I would never be able to decide on what to eat. I could starve to death. I shudder to think what kind of psychotic break baskin robins would produce given the anxiety it already creates.

Without assumptions we would be unable to function. We would be like newborn toddlers. Anyone who thinks that assumptions are nothing more than the incorrect beliefs we hold is an absolute fool. Brainwashed by those who want to cleans themselves and others of the consequences of thier own actions by blaming the victims of thier actions of being the authors of those consequences.

In other words: forget that the cactus pricks you because you are a bigot for not treating a cactus just like a tulip. It is not the needles of a cactus that created your assumptions but your unjust prejudice born of indoctrination by your bigoted parents.

Absolute fucking clown world logic.

It's a good quote and a necessary thing. He's not saying to break the window that is your perception, just to examine and clean it from time to time. Flawed assumptions can wreck your attempts to deal with the world rationally.

Exactly.

A much better quote would be "Be considerate of the fact that every rule has exceptions". Whenever I hear this quote, or anything like it, it is because someone is making the fallacious claim that exceptions disprove the rule. They will always deny that they are making that claim, but under scrutiny one can always prove that it is an inherent part of whatever argument they are making.

The idea that you can disprove a fact by pointing out an exception is a fundamental part of leftist ideology. Quotes like this are used to introduce kids to that logical fallacy.

Conversely, assumptions are how we perceive the world at all. Without them, it would be chaos.
