Heinlein, one of my favorite SF authors, was good friends with L. Ron Hubbard who made a bet with Heinlein that he (Hubbard) could start his own religion.

According to the CDC the other 50% of the people who die are older than 70.

If my understanding is correct, I think he came from the tail end of that era. I'd bet money that he was familiar with that and other popular dystopian novels of the time.

Heinlein also had a lot of other strange beliefs. Imo he is one of these authors that got way too much attention for the class i put him in. I never really liked his books and read only "Starship Troopers" which i remember to be quite boring.

But since he was quite successful and as "patriotic" (for the mediocre writing he delivered) as he was pathetic i can at least accept this quote of his.
