It's even worse than that, otherwise intelligent people are addicted to the social approval of having the "right" opinion, as well as having a safe outlet for their aggression in the form of opinion-policing others. It's not even about facts... the emotional investment/payoff is insane with this shit. They've heard one half of the story, but that story included tales of how evil the rest of story is... so they're violently-opposed to even hearing it. You can tell they haven't heard the rest of the story, because their criticisms of it amount to "Here be monsters".
