This is why Occam's razor has been turned into such a bullshit concept. Sure we can oversimplify an explanation, then declare victory since your opinion has the least amount of words, but taking an example from the post, and the actual context of Occam's razor (the least assumptions, as opposes to the simplest explanation) let's look at:

People saying this thing is a scam are being called conspiracy theorists, science deniers, liars, idiots, etc... and invoking the almighty power of Occam. But what theory has more assumptions?

In order for you to believe the media's story, here are some of the assumptions you need to make:

The media is entirely honest Politicians are all honest Doctors are all honest People aren't incentivized by the financial gain involved, and are acting out of concern for public safety only Corporations aren't intentionally pushing the narrative to stomp out small businesses Democrats aren't pushing the narrative in order to harm Trump's reelection chances The CDC guidance for labelling death statistics is normal practice Rulers aren't interested in seeing how they can control a population China, our primary economic rival, controller of media, corporations and elected officials, isn't interested in destabilizing our country The virus is real (you haven't seen it) The virus is a legitimate mutation of existing coronavirus strains that are in common circulation Exposure to the virus is bad for the population as a whole, in the long term, as opposed to allowing immunities to form naturally The virus is the actual cause of death in the 150k cases The positive tests for the virus are not false positives from other forms of coronavirus The positive tests aren't outright faked for profit And many more assumptions

In order for you to believe it's a scam:

The media is lying/gullible Doctors are lying/gullible Politicians are lying/gullible China (or another economic rival) wants to destabilize us for profit Democrats want to push the narrative to increase their odds at the elections People are responding unethically to financial incentives Corporations are intentionally pushing the narrative to take out small businesses If real, exposure to the virus is good for human civilization as opposed to hiding from it's inevitable contact Statistics being presented are dishonest/inaccurate Rulers are interested in seeing the control they can take over the population And a few more

Two points I'm trying to make. One, that the simple truth often involves as many, or more, assumptions, but people disregard many of those assumptions because the believe them to be a fact. And two, that not all assumptions are equal. For instance assuming politicians are all honest is a much larger assumption than assuming some politicians are dishonest.

But even with that being said, I don't think the Occam's razor concept was a comparison of the number of assumptions. More like a comparison of the total scale of assumptions.
