Carlin and Hicks were both really on to some great ideas.

They weren't comedians as much as wise men who happened to used stand-up comedy as a vehicle to convey their message, imo

Indeed. This is the tradition of the Heyoka, the Trickster, The Fool, the Court Jester. Wisdom disguised as humor or foolishness so that it can be transmitted directly and not censored.
