I made a joke about it being the jab, to my coworker who told me about this incident.

It's not the jab. This happened to kids playing little league since forever. It happens, and it's rare and it sucks but it happens. Pro tip: don't get slammed in the chest.

Pro tip - it rarely happens to adults, as their chests are fully developed, so go ahead and get slammed - but DON'T get slammed if you've ever suffered myocarditis, which leaves scars on the heart that leave you vulnerable to trauma: https://substack.com/inbox/post/94528094

maybe it's rare because it requires an extremely specific set of rare circumstances

Rare in adults because their chest walls are fully developed. So unless you're saying this Hamlin guy had an underdeveloped chest..?

Rare in adults because they are usually not struck extremely hard in exactly the wrong location at exactly the wrong portion of the cardiac cycle
