Lmao, this article is propaganda

"They turned Monsanto into a pantomime villain"

Monsanto is a villain, they've lost multibillion dollar lawsuits over glyphosate and repeatedly lied about its safety

We now know that the opposition to genetically modified crops in Europe has resulted in more pesticide use than would otherwise have been the case

No, one of the ways they modify the crops is to make them more resistant to glyphosate so they can use more of it to kill weeds.

The statement is true though. Without the GMOs they would certainly use higher quantity and different variety of chemicals. And they make it resistant to glyphosate so that it is unaffected, so that weeds are selectively targeted. This reduces the overall quantity and variety of pesticides needed. It's kind of a win-win for Monsanto and farmers, just a loss for the consumer/society that is exposed to tons of glyphosate because it's in absolutely everything
