Endless updates aren't really necessary. Microsoft popularized them to justify its subscription model. When new technology becomes unusable, companies can just keep selling older programs. Now that this subscription model has become widely accepted, they can keep selling the same program forever.

Of course I never update anything. I use an old version of Java and of Lucene. But in many cases there isn't an old version I can use that meet modern requirements. This was the case for all the things I implemented in my goodjava library. And Luan itself is meant for producing modern commercial websites (which is how I use it), and this can't be done with old software.
