WhatsApp is more complicated than it needs to be.

Unlike many similar issues, I don't think this one was down to incompetence or bad planning; it's unrealistic to expect that Facebook's going to put enough money into WhatsApp to remove such security vulnerabilities before they get exploited, and it's equally unrealistic to expect such a bureaucracy not to push the programmers to the point where they don't have time to think through all the holes they're opening up introducing the next greatest feature.

No, this one was down to unethical companies selling ready-made malware packages to other people and then washing their hands of what was done with them.
