$170 is for the 4G model, 2G is even cheaper if you can get it activated or want 2G. It uses a homebrew OS, not Android. Not sure if it will be capable of web browsing or not.

Using this phone would ensure that you are sharing the bare minimum of information with TPTB. If you just want a phone for calling and texting then this is the ticket.

I'll be eagerly awaiting April 2019 for this phone's release as well as the Purism phone: https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/

5G is going for 2% of your insurance's maximum yearly out of pocket expense for cancer treatment. They want a tower every 1000 feet!

I know. It's a disaster. I doubt it will get approved. To many people are digging or the dangers.
Politicians and technocrats have family's too. Insurance won't want to pay out either. I like the prorated to the insurance plan. I laughed out loud. 👍

Pshaw. Tinfoil is oldskool.

I wear an Aluminum Foil Fedora.

Awesome. I've thinking of ways to ditch my "smart" phone. DIY and build yourself is great too, everyone should have full control of their hardware (and software).

Yeah this one video that shows Android collecting and later sending GPS coordinates even when in airplane mode and without a sim card has me thinking hard about it too. They're just taking as much as possible with zero respect for their customers.

Very cool.

Also for Xmas?...

Amazing DIY Pocket PC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFOu7GnX2AQ

This is not very expensive or difficult. It's an easy do it yourself kit that kids can assemble.

Furthermore, it's a GNU/Linux computer which is far superior to Windows or Mac and on the off chance the kids get geeky they might actually learn to code with Linux rather than depend on the coporatocracy spyware control products the rest of us use. I started animating on Linux in 1995. I've used it here and there. In 2013 I used it for a while. A couple years ago I built a FreeNAS with BSD but I broke it and haven't bothered fixing it. Now I'm very close to switching again, for good, to Mint Linux.

I would love to get this myself except I have no idea what I would actually use it for. I'd like server(s) to house hard drives for filesharing and/or crypto-earning, but wants are not needs. Otherwise I don't need super powerful computers and the boxes I now have are adequate (until I start rendering animation).

Sweet diy tablet.

I used Mint for years and recommend it to all Linux newcomers (edit: 1995 is legit, don't mean to call you a newbie). I still use it at work. I miss a couple of PC only games but Steam is ramping up their linux support a ton now so that point is almost moot too. If you need a Windows only program you can dual boot or use it in a VM maybe. I'm sure it's tough with being in the art world and probably needing Adobe stuff.

Adobe is an overrated monopoly. Open source has caught up unless you're doing high end proprietary stuff and even then half the time the botch it up in obvious ways.

I am a Linux newbie. I forgot everything and the stuff I remember makes me potentially dangerous not productive.
