They had thousands of years alone to develop, and yet stayed stuck in the Stone Age.

The best weapon they had was a baseball bat with bits of glass stuck in it. Sorry, but when that's all you can innovate then yeah you're going to get stomped by the first invader who finds you. Mongol horse archers would have made mincemeat of them even without gunpowder weapons.
