It's strange they're called "invincible" when they're such broken people... seems like a reversal of terms to me. Interesting write up, thanks.

It's strange they're called "invincible" when they're such broken people.

They think a person has nothing to lose is most horrible, and they don't know how to dealing with 無敵の人.

I think it causes by 漢字 characters in Japanese.

無敵の人=invincible people

無職=Jobless

You should ask someone from Japan...

u/hennaojisan?

Another reason is I can feel the satirical tone and fearful from the whole Japanese society towards this kind of people.

I know it's not the same, but in Chinese 無敵 translates to "unequaled, without rival, a paragon"

I kind of like "unequaled". But I think your phrase "person with nothing to lose" is the best translation probably. That conveys the fear properly.

I put it into google translate, the result is invincible person...

Should I open a learning Chinese sub?I didn't find another native Chinese speaker on Saidit.

I think you didn't consider the Japanese culture for saying that... Japan is a nation that with serious vicious competition, people often thinking how to winning others in business, then they are very easy to get the idea of "invincible".

yes please, a learning chinese sub!

Yes I just find the use of "invincible" odd when that is the very group that is most likely to commit suicide, I guess.

A chinese learning sub would be cool!

The result of a nation with too many wars in history.

A chinese learning sub would be cool!

I have to wait few days for creating it.

Sounds fine, I am moderator of too many subs already haha

Yes, I think it is being used in a sarcastic/satirical way as a meme since, of course, invincible almost always means a strong person. But in another sense—not the insane murderer that people are talking about—invincible could be a Buddha or Bodhisattva, who has nothing material, but everything spiritual. That person would also be invincible but I don't think anyone is using it in the second way. I will ask some Japanese and try to get a better understanding.

Muteki also means: has no enemies. So, perhaps a person who has nothing to worry about, no obstacles. (?)

[–]Snow 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I thought the meme is from the mental state of someone playing a video game.

The satirical tone from the society to a certain group is one of reason making more 無敵の人 and make them more "invincible".

By the way,I think there will be more and more 無敵の人 came from Fukushima.

[–]hennaojisan 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That's right, the phrase came from video games—when you get enough life points you become invincible. But it was first used about 2008 by the originator of 2-chan. He meant it as the opposite of invincible (thus sarcastic/satirical) meaning people so alienated that nothing, no threat or punishment or even death can deter them from whatever evil deed might enter their demented imaginations. I think you said almost the same thing. There will be more of this but, for now, Japan is still an amazingly safe society. Even the US has been getting safer, with less violent crime since the late eighties when government agents were selling crack cocaine in poor areas. Those in power want us to be afraid because people living in fear are easier to control. School shootings are faked to control us. Racism is also wildly exaggerated or being created by people paid by Soros or others and manipulated by agents provocateurs. The world situation is not as bad as those in power want you to believe. Fight them by being happy and positive.

It's a translation, don't take it literally. You're missing a whole bunch of cultural baggage.

The invincibility is the inability to harm them. Their lives were ruined long ago and they've got nothing.

This doesn’t translate well.

Germanic languages can’t handle this level of sarcasm.

Aw man, you had an interesting idea going until you ruined it with the capitalism smear. Come on, even if you are 15 and this is deep, try to act adult.

[–]Snow 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I don't want to be "adult" in your standard. Stop to just thinking about yourself.

[–]Chipit 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It's not me, it's the entire world. You want to behave like a child, you're going to be treated like a child. Bashing the most successful system the world has ever seen turns a lot of people off. It makes you look like a political extremist.

[–]cordialsam 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I'm consistently astonished by our world capitalism. We have the unprecedented capacity to produce any material human need, in quantities that allow for equal distribution and further for excess. We even have the capacity to create every mental or spiritual need. We could create excess jobs and meaning and purpose for these people through sharing of ownership of our factories and corporations.

Yet, just as we throw away excess bread at the end of a bakery shift, we throw away excess labor and latent talent through cultural subjugation and repetitive manual labor.

I may sound like I'm waxing communist, but I am firmly in the capitalist sphere. I just believe our current version of capitalism is corrupt and the people who have been entrusted to manage our capitalism have lost sight of what the true goals of a capitalist society should be: increased wealth and health and liberty for everyone through participation by everyone.

Simple.

It's a Ponzi scheme between generations.

I'm with you man. Co-ops and ethical consumerism and boycott is the only way forward. I for one am willing to put significant time and energy into it... if only I knew where to get started. Local food co-ops and credit unions are already having great success.

Snow: Everyone has been wondering when we will hear some information about the 51-year-old slasher who killed one adult, one child and wounded 17 others. Well, some information is coming out but not through the usual official channels. I will tell you what is being said online by neighbors and relatives but I cannot guarantee it is all factual. He was raised by his aunt and uncle since the mother abandoned the family and the father left soon after.

From the age of about fifteen—this is not clear—he became a hikikomori, a child who stays in his room and has little or no contact with others in the house. His aunt and uncle had one or more children who had attended Caritas, the Catholic school of the injured children. So the crime was not completely random.

The aunt and uncle are now in their eighties and some relatives and neighbors are concerned for them. Several have been to the house and tried to find out just what is happening but the man did not respond at all. The aunt and uncle went to the local city hall six or seven times to get advice, saying that the man never talked to them and they were worried. On advice, they prepared a letter to him asking him some questions. His only response was: leave me alone and don't call me hikikomori.

I will speculate here and say that perhaps pressure on the man built up after the letter and he acted out. That is all we know right now. So, he wasn't homeless but did have a most unusual home life.

It seems the Mr. Nobody has caught up to Japan:

The Nobody is the one thing TPTB can't influence.

Muteki no hito has nothing to gain and nothing to lose.

[–]Snow 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Muteki no hito=無敵の人 pronunciation.

I guess muteki no hito love to attack wealthy children? Point it out if I am wrong.

[–]hennaojisan 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I think there is nothing in the phrase to mean he wanted to attack children but with no enemies/obstacles and no fear, he could follow any insane desire such as killing children.

I'm not even Japanese so don't believe what I say. Maybe you should ask on a Japanese site but I will try to get a better understanding.

[–]Snow 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Your name.................

Wealthy children is the opposite of 無敵の人. They are the symbol of hope and love.

Yes, I am a strange old guy but my Japanese is not all that good. Did you ever see the original Henna Ojisan? Jpn TV cannot go that far nowadays.

[–]hennaojisan 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There is another, related phrase: muteki-kun. It means someone who is a conspiracy theorist and will never stop arguing. But I don't know any people like that. Do you?

[–]Vigte 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Could it be an "upgrade" to the term "NEET" (no education, employment, training)?

Either to make it a less harsh term - or to add the sarcasm on the end to make it even more scathing.

[–]Snow 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

無敵の人 term is focus on their combat power, they think if someone pissed off a 無敵の人,the result could be awful.
