Democrats have moved too far to the left whereas Americans have moved towards the right. If Democrats don't move to the right, a new party should be started to represent the central view. The party could be called the Bull Moose Party after the party started by Theodore Roosevelt. Now, the Republicans would represent the right, the Democrats the left and the Bull Moose in the middle.

The person who wrote that editorial piece has their head so far up their ass that they don’t know if it is day or night.

But OP has a good handle on the problem. Let’s see if enough Demonrats can pull their heads out of their asses to see the light and implement the needed changes.

But first …. Is anyone running the Democratic Party yet?????

Nobody. It's not easy to find a leader. The Democrats need someone such as John F. Kennedy, young, well-educated, a family man, a military veteran, and good speaker.
