At first I thought alt-right was like a push toward laissez-faire economics, while rejecting ties to televangelists and other social ultraconservatives (which made the GOP repulsive to many who would otherwise reject the Dem's leftism).

Nah, it's anti-capitalist. There used to be more of a big tent of ancaps, racist libertarians etc but they've been chaffed while the holistic nationalists (including economics) got wheated.
