The institution of marriage doesn't come from the church. It exists in nearly every culture around the world.

The church didn't even get involved in marriage until around 1000 years ago. The first 1000 years of Christianity marriages were all civil contracts.

Yes agreed, the problem is the main reason for civil marriage got chucked out when they made divorce laws much less strict. The whole point was to basically toss in government penalties to make sure every party was doing their marital duty. Otherwise the guy or the girl might just fuck off and leave the other to fend for the kids themselves.

No point in forcing couples who hate each other to be together. But the entire concept of no-fault divorce when children are involved shouldn't exist. Before kids come into the picture? If both parties agree whatever they're adults. After the kids have grown up and left? Whatever.

Gay people want to get the same civil benefits of marriage, I think that's fine, I don't care really. Put carve outs in place for religious organizations and what not so we don't have the rediculous nonsense of gays whining about discrimination because one out of like 100 bakers available wouldn't bake them a wedding cake. Boo hoo. Stop taking attention away from real issues that gay people have to deal with, like getting fired because your boss found out you were gay, getting denied housing, etc. Not a fucking gay ass cake.

I think the other big reason the church got involved in marriage was the rich were all marrying their cousins to keep wealth in the family and becoming even more inbred and deformed than they are now.

Well the church got involved in marriage largely so they could control it. Who got married and who didn't. Also money. Marriage industry makes loads and the church naturally wants their piece.

I understand that to the atheist this is historically observable, however for we Christians marriage is a binding covenant between a man, woman, and God. The State has nothing to do with it effectually.

So if the husband dies the estate should get fully taxed before it goes to the wife because marriage has nothing to do with government they should be treated just like any other unrelated individuals.
