Well, part of 1984 was based off of Orwell's experience working for BBC from 1941-1943. The methods they use has been done for numerous decades. It's just more noticeable to a minority of politically active ppl now due to the internet.

Yes, the state and media have done things like this for decades, but we weren't doing press releases about it or giving it an official government agency. I think that is what Tulsi is referring to about dictatorships, that historically this only happens openly in an official capacity in very tyrannical regimes.
