The fate of Ukraine is not particularly important. What matters in this crisis is the display of staggering incompetence by the empire. They managed to turn what should have been a minor diplomatic matter on the fringe of Europe into a global crisis.

I don't see incompetence here. The cabal managed to get Russia to do what they wanted. Russia was forced into an action which is weakening them dramatically. The people in the US/Davos camp never wanted a minor diplomatic matter; they want a vehicle to destroy Russia. Provoking them into a Ukraine invasion is an effective move in that direction.
