I think they were dying due to competition from the expansion of cable television and the internet. They may have had a bias two decades ago, but they made fun of everyone for their quirks or missteps, and usually not in a mean way. Probably the early 2000's is when they went woke and starting attacking the right while protecting the left. They now produce something for the left to laugh at while feeling righteous.
