Even so, it wasn't a massive hoax.
It was an idiot hoax. He included his buddies, alleged maga hats, and some rope.
The black community didn't even believe it.

I do remember Dave Chappelle mentioning in his recent special (which was widely trashed by critics and denounced as "problematic", but that had excellent audience reviews) that when the Smollett thing happened the Black community wasn't saying anything, to the point where the gay community started denouncing them as being homophobic for not coming out in support, and the reason they weren't saying anything is because they knew the story didn't add up.

Maybe he's twisting history to make the bit work, I don't really know. But I do know it's a pretty funny bit either way.
