Respecting and understanding the culture is part and parcel of understanding any entity of worship. If you find good sources, the mythologies within will usually have some kind of information about how the culture once was. Cultures change over time though, so you would almost need to look at human anthropology within the area for that time period of heavier/peak worship. Different gods will have stronger staying powers than others too.

That guy is just a butthole though, he's just kissing ass when the cultures he's trying to protect/gatekeep/be a bastard about would probably rather see him piked.
