Ok, that's great, but don't push yourself.

What would the new website be about/for?

Like saidit but no politics, or very focused on the pyramid of debate, or one that is designed for political centrists... there's a lot of possibilities.

Ah, yeah. Saidit has become very political, to the point where posting anything else seems pointless. Furthermore, it's largely inhabited by right-wingers, due to the fact that they've been banned or censored on other platforms. So the first and third would be good ideas.

If you go with the second, which is also a good idea, perhaps it could be focused around professional and well-sourced discussion/debate, as opposed to the more casual nature of Saidit. I've often found myself posting essays I write here, but it doesn't ever seem to me like this is the optimal place for that.

A non-political version of Saidit would probably see some use, but I think the best option would be to develop non-political subs and make new ones. A big problem is that people go to Saidit for politics and Reddit for hobbies — and this would still be the problem for a new website.

I'm a radical centrist, so I'd definitely use a centrist version of Saidit, but I don't think many others would. A lot of people would just stay here, so you'd have to compete with yourself. A good option, perhaps, would be to create a centrist sub.

I think the second idea is the best, because it can stay more general while having better quality posts. It would still have to compete with Saidit, though, which means it would have to be built fundamentally different. Perhaps it could be built for in-depth discussion, rather than casual conversation.

Whatever you do, it can't just be "Saidit, but x" — it has to be its own thing. You never want to compete with yourself, because you'll always lose. I don't remember where I heard that quote, but some old dude probably said it.

That's just my opinion, not sure why I wrote a mini essay on it, but whatever.

Thanks for the ideas. It's actually "reddit, but x". That's what saidit is, and it's done pretty well, and we get most of our users from reddit users who want to leave. So I think it's good to have 5 different "reddit, but x" type of designs. They don't all have to be super popular, it's okay if some are small and have niche communities. But as long as each site has an obvious focus, I think it would work

I tend to see Saidit as more of a competitor to Reddit than a copy of it. Technically, it is a copy, but they provide two substantially different services. One is for the free flow of ideas and information, while the other is a safe space for left-wingers.

Yeah exactly. That's why I think a lot of different flavors of websites would work out. Everyone wants a little something different, so why not have a bunch of different communities that can all develop their own unique culture? And then also I can try out different hosting services simultaneously and if we ever have a problem with one we can flip them all over to the other server company where we're already set up. I think it will work. I think the "no politics" one has the best chance of hooking a lot of people in at launch.

Perhaps a good idea would be to have Saidit for politics, and an alternative website for everything else? It just doesn't seem economically viable to have two products, but one has less features. Companies typically only do that to lower costs or to phase out an old product — neither of which you seem to be planning to do.

And how would this new website compete with Reddit? The only reason Saidit is viable is because Reddit banned everyone right of center, and they wanted somewhere to talk politics. A lot of people here still use Reddit for non-politics, so that side of Saidit is desolate. I'm curious, from an economist's perspective, how you'd overcome this problem.

I find it funny how this conversation evolved from "the troll is back" to what equates to economics.

Maybe. Each one will attract different types of people, looking for different types of content and conversation. It's worth trying.
