I suppose we’d use the phrase ‘soil preference’ in relation to plants because Lavender consciously chooses well drained soil?

People do talk about plants preferring certain types of conditions.

Yeah. In a somewhat unsurprising yet ironic twist Merriam-Webster does that on their page for 'conifer':

I imagine they'll now be busy going back to fix such slips since preference always referred to conscious choice and we have always been at war with Eastasia.
