Under the libertarian ideology, the main purpose of a police force would be protecting people's fundamental rights. The rioters have engage in such a mass violation of people's rights and gotten away with it for months, it's absurd. The police finally stepping in to protect the majority's rights from a minority in the form of a violent mob is exactly what the police are supposed to be doing.
In an interview with Ron Paul, Jon Stewart pointed out that the government isn't the only force that can violate your rights, and he was unfortunately right. We're seeing that right now.
