In the modern era it's a result of the very frequently seen tactic of hiding behind being Jewish whenever someone tries to turn their white guilt propaganda back at them. They're happy to be white so long as it's beneficial, but as soon as it's not they jump straight to "I'm not white, I'm Jewish".
