I was one of those naive young journalists who thought Fidel would bring democracy to Cuba and then, in the style of Simón Bolivar, go about liberating and bringing democracy to all the nations of Latin America. To hear Bernie Sanders talking about Castro was sickening and acutely disgraceful.

    Castro wasn't all bad, he's managed to kick out the mafia and the corporate authoritarian pigs.

    Like all communists, he replaced them with a system that was even worse.

    Cuba ranked fifth in the hemisphere in per capita income, third in life expectancy, second in per capita ownership of automobiles and telephones, first in the number of television sets per inhabitant. The literacy rate, 76%, was the fourth highest in Latin America. Cuba ranked 11th in the world in the number of doctors per capita.

    They were comparable to the state of Mississippi. In the same time span that Cuba was destroyed by Communism South Korea went from legalized slavery and wartime ruins to a first world country. Cuba should be richer than Spain right now.
