I'm all for breaking up the states and decentralizing power, but this just seems like gerrymandering to me. What would the Republicans do with a bit of Pacific Coast if they had it? Actually accept nuclear submarines in their ports without protest? And...?

If you're gonna go, keep it simple, take everything west of the continental division line. (Ha! Imagine the USA "sharing" a mountain ridge without demanding supremacy.) And even still Nevada has so much entrenched military that it makes it silly to assume that the eastern border would be secure against the US if California were to actually Calexit.
