Well if that system had competition, through a national healthcare service, then the private sector might be forced to lower its prices to continue being able to compete. The current health insurance industry is currently a basically a monopoly, where you are legally required to participate, which is why the prices are so high.

Same reason college costs so much. You "have" to do it this one way, so it costs an insane amount because the gatekeepers control the only gate through.
