Sugar, salt, fat. Perfectly balancing the three of those in their recipies is something every major fast food chain has spent millions of dollars perfecting. If you balance all 3 well, almost everyone finds it tasty.

The 3 things hard to find in hunter-gathering.

But if you avoid fast food and eat organic in a while, you would find the taste of it is weird...

I always thought that cola tastes like ass and couldn't understand why people think it's tasty. The only thing from Coca Cola Company that doesn't taste completely weird is the fanta in the little green glass bottles. The other versions of fanta in cans and plastic bottles taste weird as well.

But then if they add 10% too much salt the illusion comes crashing down- my God, I'm eating a salt lick.

I had a friend in college who would literally lick salt cubes rather than eat candy. He said it tasted way better

No, I'm pretty sure not. He was kind of an alcoholic though

They have to keep increasing the amounts of all three as well as consumers grow accustomed to massive amounts of sugar/salt/fat in the diet. It amazing how sweet and salty modern food tastes after you've taken a few month break and cooked all your own food.
