I took an Amtrak a while back. It was incredibly fun. Every town we went through, guys were standing near the tracks filming the train go by. It was cool, and nice to see hobbyists still interested in trains.

You sound like you were a celebrity, or someone famous, being recorded as you went by! But I understand it was the train they were mostly interested in.
I agree with you that trains can be enjoyable to ride. They are also very useful for moving goods throughout the land, like grain and fertilizer. There have been attempts to convince rail workers to strike. When the trains stop moving, the movement of those things that we often take for granted will be hindered, causing serious supply problems. The moving trains shows that society is still somewhat orderly.
