I shredded the tobacco from Canadian Virginia flue cured whole leaf.

I'm tempted to leave tiny baggies of menthol laying around, looks like meth.

You should use Vick's Vaporub and see if it heals your lungs while the tobacco is damaging them.

Vicks is just menthol and camphor oil iirc. The menthol makes the damage much worse. After a week or so of smoking menthols my lungs physically hurt and I have to take a break. That doesn't happen at all with regulars, no matter how much I smoke.

It's funny, my family was just talking about Vicks too. Today is a very DIY day, made an 18% menthol spray and my father just mixed up a batch of 1% neem oil for me. I'd never seen this before, but leaf miners went after my pepper plants. Normally they terrorize the basil.

Dude, are you growing peppers in a sharps container?

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Yeah, the lids broke and so the hospital was throwing a bunch away. They're useless without a lid as a sharp's container. Thought they'd make good planting containers, particularly as my stupid patio needs things to be elevated to get any light, and all I got are two small baskets on top of the railing.

Props for reusing discards. I was really confused as to how something could go from "biohazard containment receptacle" to "food cultivation vessel". I guess this is plastic's version of a glow-up.

Good luck with those pests. It's turning cool here, but I've got some Tabascos and Serranos still growing. We'll see if the rest of the Reapers ripen.

I love menthol ciggaretts. Even if I don’t smoke regularly, it’s a nice treat if I’m celebrating or it’s been a long fortnight.

I'm a regular smoker, but menthol is just an occasional treat for me too, it messes up the lungs pretty quickly and I have to take a break when my lungs start physically hurting.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

Yea. I love the feeling.

Have you tried cigars? I see popular people I like smoking them. I wonder if they are that good.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I smoke cigars infrequently. I was given ten nice stogies for Christmas years ago, and I still have 3 in my humidor. My cigar cutter is so dull I use a razor blade to cut the end off to smoke. They're nice, but my problem is the time commitment. A medium sized cigar can be a good 45 minutes of smoking. I have a hard time just sitting there smoking that long. And I start craving ciggs even while smoking a cigar.

There's some pretty decent cigars out there if you enjoy tobacco. There's a lot of varietals of tobacco you only ever encounter in cigars. This is shredded whole leaf tobacco, and one used often for ciggs, but the other reason to buy whole leaf is for rolling cigars. I have a really strong wrapper I bought a while back and did some ciggs/cigars with a natural wrapper and sealed with egg whites. It was interesting, but not something I'd want as a daily smoke.

Yea, that’s interesting, how nuanced smoking is. I enjoy it.

Despite giving up several years ago, I miss the act of smoking. Recently, I had a cigar. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would and can see myself enjoying them more often.

Banning menthol is the most insane idea since the start of the drug war. There are dozens of more dangerous drugs, and they're not even banning tobacco. This is like banning orange flavored soda ONLY. WTF.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (9 children)

Menthol is a force multiplier for messing up your lungs. I'll probably only be able to smoke these for a week before my lungs start hurting with how much I smoke. Even so, it isn't the government's job to protect us from menthol, that's some nanny state BS.

And of course it disproportionately affects black smokers, they often only smoke menthols. Democrats do love protecting black people from making their own decisions, since massa knows best.

[–]proc0 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

Oh is there a harmful effect from that flavor? It's strange only now they're discovering this. The consistent thing would be to add more warning labels and or tax it. I get de-incentivizing some drugs, but banning it will only add them to the black market.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Iirc the menthol creates micro tears in the tissue and the smoke further irritates it. Clove cigarettes have the same problem. I smoked those for a bit in college till I started coughing up blood.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Where u finding that info? Cuz when i looked it up i only found the reason for banning menthol was that menthol smokers would smoke more and apparently had a harder time sensing they were harming their lungs since the menthol flavor masks the bad feelings that one normally gets from smoking too much. So yeah pretty sure micro tears thing is BS.

So i'd say either the same thing that happens to other people happens to you, where you smoke too much and the menthol flavor masks the harmful feelings. Or it's just in your head because you know menthol is being banned and so you associated it with being more dangerous.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

There are several reasons given for the banning of menthol cigarettes, one of which is the masking of the harshness of the smoke.

Other research suggests that menthol increases airflow in our respiratory system, affects the way nicotine interacts with the receptors, how it is metabolised, and how we withdraw from the nicotine. All these things can contribute to further and worsened addiction.

I had been under the impression these were mostly myth, but there does seem to be something behind it. Originally I thought the bans were due to the glorification of smoking by making it more flavoursome and attractive to non-smokers to start.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Quit smoking a few years ago, by the point i was regularly smoking menthols when i tried non-menthol it felt like garbage lol. So yeah could be something to that, thankfully never smoked too much, i think like 6-8 cigs a day was my average and i also smoked on and off. AKA Mark Twain's quote "quitting smoking is easy, i've done it hundreds of times". The rare times i dream of having a cig, it's definitely a menthol.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

You know I'd never looked into personally, just shit older smokers used to tell me and it sounded reasonable enough to explain the effects I've experienced.

Fair enough, definitely heard that myth as well growing up.

Love those Newports. And Kools of course but you only get a few years on those.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (6 children)

Menthol has been banned in the UK now for a few years. Irrational way of thinking, as was banning smaller packs of 10 cigarettes. People just switch to vapes because it's cool and cheap and tastes like cherry pie.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

The vapes are probably better for everyone, so maybe it wasn't so irrational after all. Whole leaf tobacco is untaxed here, and "pipe tobacco" has a lower class L tax instead of a class M cigarette tax, so rolling my own is still more cost effective than a vape when a lb of tobacco costs me $10-$18 and that will produce 1.5-3 cartons worth of smokes.

DIY vape juice can make it competitive, but I didn't have good results, I suspect due to the flavoring agent I was using.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Vapes irritate me. I smoked for 18 years and was fairly polite about smoking away from people or not blowing smoke on people. Many who vape choose to purchase devices which produce excessive clouds of sickly sweet smelly foulness that hangs in the air. I can smell it blown from car windows as I drive behind them on the motorcycle. I hate those people.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

The cloud chasing bros. I don't encounter many of them anymore, usually just a few at festivals or concerts and it's usually guys of a certain age. The kiddos all seem to like their elfbars or whatever they're called.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

In the good old days, I'd roll up to the local grocery store aged 14, grab me some 20 fine tobacco sticks and half a dozen rough ciders for under £5. Of course the legal age for smoking was 16 then and we didn't need it to be cherry-mango-pussypassion-delight flavour, it was just proper sandpaper tobacco that made a man outta you. Ah, the good old days.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

We don't have your ciders, but I can still get a cheap six pack and my tobacco costs what they did back in the late 90s for under $10, or what £5 used to be. It's getting hard though. Funnily enough, brand name soda costs more than cheap beer now.

Not one comment in here about how this is utterly ridiculous in terms of your free will. Nobody cares who kills themselves from smoking and nobody cares if menthol makes it worse. Keep trading your liberty for the facade of safety, it's not a slippery slope at all.

[–]David_Allen_Cope1 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Smoked 3 packs a day at one point. Gave it up for vaping and feel a shit load better. Consider it, man.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I've tried a few times to make the switch, even with nicotine salts. I have 3 main problems: it just isn't the same, the non-disposable tanks leak, and the disposables are not cost effective. If I could DIY the e-liquid, I tried once, but it kept gumming up the coils, however that's not an insurmountable problem, and found a tank that didn't leak I might try again.

[–]Scolias 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

the non-disposable tanks leak,

Not if you buy a good one lol. I've been using the same tank for 5-6 years no. 0 leaking issues

Which one?

I know a guy who tried to switch to vaping to break his nicotine habit, and the darn things melted his teeth. Literally melted his teeth. His coughing got worse with vaping. He's back to cigarettes now, and weirdly, his lungs seem healthier.

[–]package 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

plot twist his "teeth" were actually pure tooth-shaped tartar from years of unhealthy living

Menthol cigarettes were banned in EU last year.

I never liked them anyway.
