This is called a proppant. It's generally a man-made ceramic. Basically when fraccing, the pressure is greatly increased within the reservoir or coal seam which generates cracks. This proppant is part of the pressuring fluids and is forced in. When the pressuring is completed the proppant holds the cracks open and increased porosity/permeability of the formation enables production.

i understand that when we first found oil, it oozed out of the ground on its own... but now we have to force mother nature to give up the goods.

in the end, you are going seriously regret that you didnt leave the oil and the gold and the silver right where it is in the ground.
