What the fuck is this chart? How is any of that related to planned obsolescence ?

Is author aware of the fact that over a period of time honey basically becomes sugar?

The article uses a really weird method of determining "obsolescence"

Here, We survey and compare how long a product could last before they are deemed unconsumable, or considered phased out or outmoded (i.e, a new model is constructed)

So basically if the company releases a new model the next year then this chart likely considers the original model obsolete regardless of if it still functions. That would explain why the iPhone 3g and 4 only have a one year rating, or PS3 only being rated for 7 years despite myself personally having several original PS3s that are still in excellent working order.

[–]WebcomicAddiction 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

That makes very little sense considering that new models might be made for the different type of customer base or that older models are usually still supported by the companies.

Yep I just paid 800.00 for a 300.00 dishwasher we still have an old dish washer from the 70s runs just fine and I have never had to repair it. My new $800machine broke 3days in. Open source appliances where are you? We have installed the old bar dish washer right in its place looks odd but 800.00 is going to Bernie employee businesses will be able to compete only with a change in leadership. Not me us!

In France, it's now required that all products list their estimated lifetime on their packaging.

So, how much tech change has salt gone through in the past 40 years?

None? It's been the exact same product for thousands of years? OK.

What a stupid comparison.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (9 children)

Point accepted. How ever you fail to realize the waste in your statement. Redesigned is not he issue the next great thing isn't the answer it isn't even close. Copyright is fucked in America. I blame capitalism! an the way salt it is minded and packaged changes every day because it's a built in feature to waste. I can't even try to repair my things anymore John Deer told me so.

[–]Chipit 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

How'd you get from "tech advancement makes things obsolete" to "Copyright is fucked in America"?

You practicing mental leaps for the Olympics or something?

150 years protection for a small change is costing us trillions prove me wrong. The next big thing is killing America. Waste of resources and fixing profit is the king.

? I blame ownership laws for the waste of obsolescence. Break those and we won't have this next big thing that takes away the earphone jack on your iPhone and charge you a hundred dollars plus the new ear buds. Conversely we could find landfills and dumpsters with less ewaste. Don't blow a valve not very worth it. We waste so much in our riches to this insidious next big thing. And laws that grant rights to manufactured myths by the greedy is the the problem.

[–]WebcomicAddiction 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Well its all true, its just your phrasing and constant references to some niche terms sometimes makes your comments unreadable.

What defines the shelf life of these electronic items? I'm pretty sure a lot of the Apple products, for example, last a lot longer than is listed here.

Edit: Also, do you have a link to the specific page you found this infographic?

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Shelf life would mean how long the company supports said products. Obviously you can continue to use the original iPhone, or the SNES, but Apple doesn't repair or make updates for the iPhone, and Nintendo doesn't sell the SNES or make games for it.

[–]magnora7 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Oh I thought they were talking about the battery wearing out or the electronics breaking, but I guess you're right. Since salt or sugar cannot be "outdated" like electronics can, it's a bit of an odd comparison. Still interesting though. I had no idea tea has a shelf life

[–]happysmash27 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Don't iPhones get about 5 years of updates though? The iMac G3, too, appears to have OS support to OS X 10.5, released almost a decade later, which is a few years more than 5.

[–]Vigte 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Neat and definitely not vertigo inducing!

[–]Entropick 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

SNES 1982? About a decade off there.

[–]Many_Coconut 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

PlayStation's shelflife was not 12 years, not by their own definition of obsolescence.
