This sort of over-engineering is pretty widespread. I think it ties back to narcissism: "Mommy said I'm smart and that I'd be a great engineer so let me put my own nauseating little stink on everything!"
Europe is probably the worst with it. I literally can't use anything German without rapidly discovering I want to tear it into a thousand tiny pieces. America is close behind- I'm thinking of all the shit ideas GM comes up with, like automatically locking the doors when you drive off or leaving the radio on until the driver opens his door.
