One of the stupid modern developments is the rise of tamper-resistant outlets. These intend to make things safer by adding a plastic mechanism that makes it very difficult to plug things in, and I guess therefore making it more difficult for you to accidentally stick conductive objects into the sockets. This in their mind makes things "safer", but the thing is that when these plastic mechanisms break you have to open up the electrical outlet, which exposes you to far more danger. Today the plastic mechanism in my apartment's outlet broke, making the outlet stop working, and so I had to open the outlet up. The spring mechanism had fallen out of the outlet into a difficult to reach location in the electrical wiring in the wall. My first thought was to try to fish the plastic mechanism out with a screwdriver that was nearby, before realizing how dangerous this would be, due to the exposed metal contacts inside of the wall.

Do you see the point? When you complicate things with these "safety mechanisms", this can introduce you to more danger than there was in the first place when they break.
