It used to be that being a cop was a relatively low-paid position, but then at some point Americans started worshipping cops and this lead to an increase of their prestige, and now in many parts of the US being a cop is an extremely high-paid profession.
I am wondering if the cop worship was a product of Stockholm syndrome. Americans love those who tyrannize them, which is why they promoted cops.
If this is the case, then maybe bureaucrats such as those in the DMV are the next to have their status boosted, because they are tyrants too. Americans will see DMV workers be rude and sarcastic to people trying to renew their license. The Americans will derive pleasure from hearing stories about DMV tyrants putting commoners in their place. And this will make Americans clap their hands when new legislation is passed to give more money and privileges to the DMV, and hire more DMV workers. (This won't make things faster though because these workers will just invent more unnecessary work to do, or force you to do.) At some point there will be so many DMV workers that they will become a politically powerful group and they will unionize, and force the government to give them more money. And then being a DMV worker will become a prestigious high-paying job.
