Modern scum give me anxiety

I am staying at a nice but from what I read totalitarian apartment. The way they do trash here is you put your trash can outside, and they empty it. But if you don't bring in your trash can by the morning they will fine you.

This morning I saw one of the apartment's standard trash cans outside of my apartment which did not belong to me (mine was inside). I thought nothing of it at first - "maybe one of the apartment staff was doing work in the area and left the trash can there. I will just leave it outside and they will be back for it". But then I started thinking, "what if no one comes back for it and the apartment staff fines me because they say it is my trash can?" I didn't think much of this either, because I could just demonstrate to them that it was not my trash can, and since it was their mistake, they would have to reverse any fine they give me. If they persisted, I could just dispute whatever fine they give me, take it to court if need be.

But then I started thinking about it some more, and I started remembering how unreasonable modern scum are. They would probably say that it is my responsibility to make sure there are no trash cans outside, even if the trash cans were placed there by apartment staff. I imagined myself asking them questions like "Are you saying your policy entitles you to just place trash cans outside of tenants' homes, and then fine them for this?", and then I imagined them responding to my question with a non-sequitur general statement like "It is the tenant's responsibility to make sure the outside of his apartment is clear of any trash cans". Because in my experience this is how it really is when I try to reason with modern scum. And if I tried to dispute the fine in court, the court would probably side with the apartment, because these days the average American hates private individuals, views the private individual as having no rights, and views policy of large organizations as being the absolute truth. So a court or any institution made up of Americans would support the apartment in extorting me with dishonest fines.

Wanting to avoid this nightmare, I immediately contacted the apartment and asked them to take the trash can away. Even still I am terrified that they will fine me anyway.

So you would have done nothing, if you had had your way?

I would have contacted them, even if I were living in a "non-totalitarian" apartment. So IMO you didn't have to reason out all those worst-case scenarios. You could have just contacted them from the start, and saved yourself all that anxiety.

I have that trashcan bullshit too. I don't even use it, it's too small. Other neighbors were leaving theirs outside though so I do too since it wastes space inside.

Yup. I got evicted because the last apartment complex didn't want to fix the AC. Judge just rubber stamped it despite the apartment having an obligation to provide AC as a safety issue, and retaliation is supposed to be illegal.

Your analysis is correct but the anxiety isn't justified. Just continue analyzing modern situations in this way, by understanding the insanity of modern culture, and you should have no problems.
