Gizmodo called NFTs a scam for a digital receipt of a public file. I thought that fit rather nicely.
The only place I could see them being big is representing virtual items in a game, and of course tax evasion.

tl;dr: it's a fad like the Tulip bulbs but some people will get rich parting fools and their money before the fad dies down
