virtue-signalling to the moronic masses

Through this evil signalling, the evil intelligent people are able to identify each other so that they can cooperate to do evil.

I think these represent the extremes of the target audience, or the two ends of the intelligence bell curve at which the two types of signalling respectively are aimed.

What about the midwits? I think they suffer from a combination of self-imposed stupidity/blindness (through years of indoctrination as well as simple cowardice) and a kind of received psychopathy which they absorb from their superiors in the social hierarchy. How consciously they do this would vary but it seems to derive from some combination of Stockholm syndrome (unconscious loyalty to the evil regime) that induces reflexive parroting of certain memes, and calculated self-interest. And of course social media works as an echo-chamber that such maniacs are drawn to in the first place and gives them a platform to spew their venom.

Anyway, this is nothing new. There was a similar phenomenon in communist countries, where psychopaths and sellouts were fond of using vacuous social-justice sloganeering and hypocritical virtue-posturing for career-advancement purposes.

Insightful. Saved, along with OP.

Not limited to communists. Capitalist and consumerist cultures have MUCH to criticize as well, it's just different, but many of their means are the same. Ultimately their goals are singular where they all merge: totalitarianism.

I agree it's an important phenomenon to be aware of.

Certainly it's not limited to communists, they just reflected their place and time, as do the current memes/slogans. Red banners then, black banners now.

Even though the communist project apparently 'failed', its proponents have had some thirty years to regroup, readjust and refine their methods.

Failed = morphed.

As all politics do.

It failed in that specific form, but that doesn't matter. The overall program just transitioned into new modalities. Nearly 30 years ago, Mr. Bezmenov warned Americans that this was already well underway and that they were ripe for the picking.

Truth.
