China is a different place. A lot of Chinese people hate it, and find ways to get around it, but a surprisingly large portion of the Chinese public is perfectly OK with it. Americans think of free speech as a way to pit good ideas against bad one, but in China they see free speech as a way for bad ideas to proliferate unchecked, leading to separatism and violence.
