Most of the iraq vets that I know tend to be cool as a cucumber. Way less hot-headed than the average cop, and they do get fairly frequent psych evals ("going to the wizard") for awhile after they're out.

I'd say they're more qualified for this kind of gig than most. It's the gig itself that's questionable. There are probably easier ways to secure a school than big iron. My idea is that if there's a secure fence with perimeter detection (commodity nowadays) you can run everyone through metal detectors going in and out and be pretty certain that everyone on campus is supposed to be there and isn't a threat.

At that point, you can have a single guard with a concealed weapon keeping tabs on the fence and a group of people watching the metal detectors (that are more or less unskilled) and be way safer than just having a dude with a gun or dudes with guns patrolling around.

Oh you know, kids being kids, teasing, taunting - probably trying to touch the gun... until one of them is having a bad day and is taking their anti-psychotics, snaps and beats the kid to a pulp or just shoots them out of reflex.

I know there's some serious PTSD issues with many military personnel but not every service member has a mental issue. Is might be anecdotal but out of the many service members I know very few actually have mental issues.

Plus, ya know. I'm sure there's a strict vetting process behind it as well.

Of course there is a strict hiring process - and no, not all have problems from the war - but truth be told, a high percentage do - and they are the one's having problems finding jobs it would seem.

At least one of them is going to slip through the hiring process - seeing as how there aren't that many solid opportunities for these people.

Don't get me wrong, I'm on the soldier's side in this - kids can be dicks.

It's just a mathematical probability/inevitability of putting an armed person in a school.
