Why do they sentence people to crazy amounts of time? Why can't they just say life?

I think it has to do with how the system works. An inmate is often eligible for parole after serving 60% or less of their sentence, because of, or along with modifiers for good behavior -- not really sure which. The ridiculous prison sentences makes sure they will never ever get out of jail again no matter what rules might make their eligible for early release.

And I'm sure just to send a message also.

Life without parole is a thing. I don't like it but it makes more sense than 3,000 years.
