You don't need to treat trans or nonconforming gender.

But they are a possible diagnosis if a patient presents with gender dysphoria. Which should be treated. To the extent that it can. For the reason you point out. It is distressing and is the cause of psychiatric illness and suicidal ideation.

How would nonconformity be a bad thing? Unless of course we just think people should conform.

It's not a bad thing of itself. But if you find TGNC with gender dysphoria, then the dysphoria is very likely to be consistent over time, and you would look at treatments building up to and including non-reversible treatments.

Well the other way around. The consistent dysphoria is evidence of TGNC, rather than psychiatric illness.

But you can certainly get TGNC without gender dysphoria, and that is not a bad thing.

Uhh no, gender dysphoria is psychiatric illness, and one you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Saying it's not is actually a little offensive to me, acting as if I don't hate my life and it's no big deal. What could possibly be more ill than being aligned to the wrong body type? It should not be connected to gender non-conformity, unless you have sexist prejudices.

Well, technically, no. It's a mental disorder, in that it's in the DSM V, but a psychiatric illness means psychosis. That is difficulties determining what is real and what is not real, and often including delusions or hallucinations.

Saying it's not is actually a little offensive to me, acting as if I don't hate my life and it's no big deal.

I'm sorry to imply that. But the reality is that Ruling out Psychiatric Illness is the language that is used by some psychologists when doing Gender Dysphoria Diagnosis.

What could possibly be more ill than being aligned to the wrong body type?

I have no illusions that it's not unpleasant.

It should not be connected to gender non-conformity,

These days (since the DSM-V in 2013), GD can be diagnosed in people with disorders of sex development. I don't have an opinion on the correctness of that, and you're welcome to yours. However: It is what it is.

unless you have sexist prejudices.

What's the connection there?

Well I guess it's more accurately a neurological illness. Still far from "entirely normal and healthy". It should have nothing to do with social gender roles, or we're talking about something completely different.
