There is a third drug (actually first in sequence), a sedative/anesthetic, but because of the paralytic it's really hard to confirm whether this is actually working properly. Honestly this method seems way too complicated. I don't agree with the death penalty anyway, but why not just use fentanyl or something?

Big pharma doesn't want their prized cash cows being associated with death.

It's not like fentanyl is associated with death currently or anything...

But if not that, then nitrogen. It's painless and basically foolproof. No oxygen, you die. But because you're not breathing "stale air" (CO2) you barely notice it's happening. I believe at least one state allows this as a backup method, but I don't know why they don't go ahead and make it the first choice.

They could even drug them like daily or randomly over years

That might be kind of cruel, they'd always be wondering if today was their day, but I've also wondered why they don't just use fent.

Alcohol (ethanol) would do. It would need a intravenous infusion bag full of the stuff, a syringe full wouldn't do it. But it would work, and every execution would send a useful public health message to young men about binge drinking and alcohol poisoning.
