The most awesome see-the-milkyway experience was when I tramped through Spain and Portugal around 1980. Someone had dropped us close to Algeciras and we slept in a corn field. Ive never seen so many stars. The milkyway was the most prominent feature of course but the rest of the sky was a sea of glitter, too.

Sounds like a good memory. You must have been free from light pollution in the corn field, so you could see the stars easier. Back then, the corn might also have been better quality.

I think it was the dry climate of southern Spain.

Oh, I suppose that meant less clouds and atmospheric moisture to block your view of the stars.
