I think that if we look deeper into this story, you find a person who would not normally be combative and violent against a person of different beliefs without the media and politicians trying to make people think the "other half" are evil and need to be "handled".

Maybe so. But it is still up to the individual to refrain from violence. Personal responsibility can not be negated.
