    XY DSD athletes are barred from competing in the women's 400-1500 races. The ban isn't confined to those disciplines for any logical reason, but was meant to be an ad hoc solution to the Caster Semenya situation a few years back. As for why they are allowed to compete with women at all, I think it's because of the legal precedent established when Maria Jose Martinez Patino, a former elite hurdler and XY DSD athlete, sued the IAAF in the late 80s/early 90s. She won her case and opened the door for other XY DSD athletes to participate in women's sports.

      Well they'd hate to be mean and hurt someone's feelings, you know. Better to lose out on a scholarship or an international gold medal.
