If the news can be trusted the gun used was a home made jobber yet I wonder where he got the bullets? "Gun stores" do not exist in Japan and sporting good stores would not be selling ammo. News said "large puff of smoke" and that makes me think of a black powder rig.

I've seen it described as white smoke too, but I think you're right, he fired a cannon rather than a gun.

Now that I've seen more and a few snaps of the hand cannon looks like a small boomer total home made probably galvanized pipe and filled with some sort of shot/bb balls or such and powder could have been a dry mix that can be made from usual/normal chemical supply houses. Not that hard. But remember "no guns in Japan" yah right. Then they just go stabby with knives and swords exact like muzzies.
